"Doing it by the book"

We are pleased to announce that our annual Charity Legacy Officers' Seminar will be held at Plaisterers’ Hall, London EC2Y 5JU on Wednesday 16 October 2024.

Registration will be from 09:30 for a 10:00 start with lunch included and drinks at 16:00 to close

We respect the fact that everyone working in the legacy sector wants to "get it right" for their charity. The purpose of this seminar is to help you keep getting it right.

Your charity is left a legacy by someone you don’t really want to be associated with – a convicted sex offender, perhaps. Should you reject the gift? Can you reject it? What questions should you ask, and what procedures should you follow to protect your charity?

Poorly drafted Wills create more than their fair share of problems. A comprehensive case study will cover all the bases – construction (asking the court to interpret the Will), rectification (asking the court to correct the Will), and professional negligence (who pays to sort it out?). And when are you allowed to consider external evidence such as the Will file? A panel of experts (two members of the team at Wilsons and three specialist barristers) explore the issues and offer practical advice, in an interactive case study.

Ex gratia payments. When can you/can’t you/should you make them? We look at what legal changes are coming up, and offer useful tips on how to handle ex gratias correctly and avoid the pitfalls.

A review of the changes affecting legacies, brought about by the Charities Act 2022. What changes should the Act make to your day-to-day caseload? An up-to-the-minute overview of the state of the residential property market, from Berrys.

And we review highlights from important cases, decided over the past twelve months, which affect your workload. We’ll look at the helpful cases and see if you can limit the damage from the less helpful ones. We respect the fact that everyone working in the legacy sector wants to “get it right” for their charity. The purpose of this seminar is to help you keep getting it right.

All that, and lunch and networking too.
