Covid-19 – Government issues extension to the moratorium on possession proceedings

8 June 2020

As reported in our article on 30 March 2020 (here), on 27 March 2020 the Master of the Rolls and Lord Chancellor issued rules preventing the prosecution of possession claims for a period of 90 days, until 25 June 2020 in light of the Covid-19 situation.

That date is fast approaching. The government's Civil Procedure Rule Committee has now agreed to extend the ban by a further two months (until 23 August 2020) and this was announced by the government on 5 June 2020. A copy of the press release can be found here.

This extension will no doubt be welcome news for many renters up and down the country. We envisage the existing rules (Practice Direction 51Z) will simply be updated to reflect this change but we will nevertheless confirm this once we have further news.

If you have any queries or questions regarding the above, or about possession proceedings generally, please contact Michael Ellis or Alexandra Sollohub or complete the form below and one of the team will get back to you.
