With the World Cup tournament now in full swing, People Management asks if office lotteries might be breaking the law. Employment lawyers have warned that traditional, sporting sweepsteak could fall under gambling regulations.
The Gambling Commission allows the general public to take part in work lotteries for major events, if all the employees work in the same office. Since Covid, hybrid and remote working has increased which means that employees who work from home might not be allowed to enter the office sweepstake.
Sarah Bull comments: "Under UK gambling laws, organisations that run gambling events usually need a licence. However, if an employer follows the right rules, a workplace sweepstake will be considered a work lottery, for which no licence is needed. The rules are set out on the Gambling Commission website."
