The Chalke History Festival

The Chalke History Festival, renowned as the UK's biggest and best history festival, enchanted and educated visitors from 24 June to 30 June 2024. Nestled within the breathtaking 70 acres of Broad Chalke, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, this week-long celebration provided an immersive journey through time with a blend of stimulating talks, interactive panels, and captivating performances.

This year's festival hosted over 150 talks delivered by some of the most esteemed experts in the field, covering an expansive range of historical topics from ancient eras to modern times. Notable speakers included The Grand Tour's James May, comedian Al Murray, and presenter Michael Palin, among many others. Wilsons proudly sponsored two major talks, supporting the insightful sessions by Robert Peston and Fred Casella, as well as James Holland and Al Murray. It was a privilege to once again entertain our guests at this excellent event.

The festival’s unique appeal lies in its interactive living history program, led by popular TV historians. Visitors could dive into hands-on experiences, mastering traditional crafts and culinary arts or simulating a soldier's march. Demonstrations that vividly brought history to life, from cookery and daily life, medicine and surgery, to evolving warfare, tactics, and weaponry.

For families, the Chalke History Festival offered a plethora of engaging activities. Children and teenagers could partake in Soldier School, puppetry, arts and crafts, and enjoyed the return of Wizzo’s Rip-Roaring History—a circus sideshow with extraordinary historical stories. With something for every age, it was truly a celebration of history like no other.

This year's festival introduced several exciting changes. With a new name and look, the event delivered more panels and discussions, additional live music, and a refreshed layout featuring five main venues for talks and discussions.

Highlights included live music such as an ABBA tribute act on Friday night, a D-Day Dance on Saturday evening, and a luxurious five-course historical banquet on Sunday afternoon.

The Chalke History Festival was an unforgettable journey through history, where every member of the family can engage, learn, and be inspired.
